Supergoods x WOW Colours: Which Summer stripes suit you best?

Summer is the perfect season for stripes. Classic Breton stripes are almost synonymous with the beach, sunshine, and joie de vivre. Just as with any print or pattern, you may have noticed that some stripes suit you better than others. In this blog post, Supergoods co-founder and colour analyst at WOW Colours Studio explains how to choose the best stripes based on your natural colouring.

HIGH CONTRAST STRIPES, LIKE BLACK AND WHITE

When the colours in stripes are far apart in depth or value, they create high contrast. A classic black-and-white stripe, for example, has very high contrast. This makes the stripes visually strong and eye-catching. These types of stripes tend to suit people whose colouring is also high-contrast, very deep, or strikingly bright.

For someone with softer colouring, however, high-contrast stripes can be a little overpowering. In practice, this means that the eye may be drawn to the striped garment rather than to the person wearing it. For example, someone with blonde or medium-toned hair and a skin tone that is close in value to their hair colour can easily be overwhelmed by very strong, contrasting patterns.

Also very bright or bold colours can make the stripes contrasting.

MEDIUM CONTRAST STRIPES, LIKE NAVY AND ECRU

Our colouring can also be of medium contrast. In this case, we may have a relatively light or dark skin tone, along with some contrast between the depth of our hair colour, eye colour, and eyebrows. Medium-contrast colour combinations tend in this case work best for us. For example, instead of a stark black-and-white stripe, we might choose beige instead of white and navy instead of black.

This way, the stripes are strong enough to add interest to an outfit without taking attention away from the person wearing it. Medium-contrast stripes are a good place to start if you are unsure about your own level of contrast.

LOW CONTRAST STRIPES, SOFT COMBINATION OF STRIPES

We can also wear low-contrast stripes, where the colours are quite close to each other in depth or all the colours are soft or dusty. From a distance, the stripes may even be difficult to distinguish.

These subtle stripes are ideal if your natural contrast is low, meaning that your skin, hair, and facial features are similar in depth. Light-coloured hair, eyes, and skin are a common example, but people with darker colouring can also have low contrast if their features are similar in depth.

Softer stripes may suit you better if black-and-white patterns tend to draw too much attention away from you or feel disconnected from your natural colouring.
