Ms. Bay bags
Ms. Bay is not your average luxury handbag brand. Ms. Bay was founded by Saskia Aelen and Lawrence Dedroog in Antwerp. Salmon leather is the main material of the collection. Salmon skins are a waste product from the fishing industry. Currently only 1% of all fish skins are recycled. Fish leather is a rescued material that has qualities similar to those of regular leather but can be processed in a more environmental-friendly way. Its strength makes for durable products. Together with a timeless design, fish leather is a future-proof material.
The fish skins are upcycled into leather by an environmental friendly tannery. Usually tanning leather demands a large quantity of warm water. The tannery makes use of geothermal water, water that is heated by the earth's energy. All other energy required is hydropower.
Ms. Bay produces in Kolkata, India. We only collaborate with factories that are in line with our vision and values. All of the factories we work with, are SA8000 standard certified. This means that they qualify for fair trade standards what comes to child labour, health and safety and for example discrimination.
To limit the waste and increase the use of recycled materials, Ms. Bay never discards the remnants of the leather. Instead, they reuse them to make some of some smaller items.
